JOIN TEAM CARR GOMM AND STOMP OUT LONELINESS!

Join us on our 1,000 mile virtual journey around Scotland raising £30,000 to Stomp Out Loneliness.

We are looking for 300 people to sign up to our challenge and each raise £100 by getting active. Simply pledge your target distance and we’ll add it to our 1,000 mile virtual route around Scotland. You can clock up your miles however you like – be it walking, dancing, swimming, in a wheelchair push challenge, or by doing leg raises whilst sitting in a chair – as long as you are active, social and raise some money along the way.

So, whether you bike around the Borders, golf in Glasgow, or dance in Dundee, there’s a way for everyone to get involved!

What do you mean by 'Stomp out Loneliness'?

Britain is the loneliness capital of Europe with many factors contributing to this, including social isolation, which can be further complicated by physical and mental ill-health, disability and poverty. Life transitions such as divorce, bereavement and unemployment can be key triggers for loneliness. We know that loneliness is bad for our health; but did you know it is as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?

“What does it feel like to be lonely? I can tell you exactly, it’s like being in a bubble and you want to get out but you just can’t, you try and you can’t do it, you just can’t get out.” Trapped in a Bubble report, Co-Op & British Red Cross

Friendships and social connections help us stay well and help us recover when we’re not feeling our best.

Loneliness is an issue that affects us all. Over one million older people always or often feel lonely, as well as 68% of people aged 18-65 and an incredible 80% of under 18’s.

And with a staggering eight in ten people feeling negatively judged for feeling lonely, and 92% of people finding it difficult to tell others they are lonely, the cycle can become difficult to escape. Loneliness and social isolation are significant issues that affect us all.

So what can you do about it? Join Team Carr Gomm on our 1,000 mile virtual journey around Scotland, and help us raise money to fund our vital projects and activities which are supporting people to reintegrate with their local communities and ultimately change their lives. Together, we can make a difference.

I’m not fit or sporty, or have reduced mobility – how can I take part?

Team Carr Gomm is for everyone and everyone’s personal contribution to our virtual 1,000 mile journey is equally important.

Team Carr Gomm has been created with everyone in mind, so you can get involved no matter your age, fitness, or level of mobility; we want everyone to know they are included. Our aim is, therefore, to be able to convert every single activity, exercise or movement (even abseiling, throws of a ball or physio exercises in a wheelchair) into miles which can then be added to our 1,000 mile route.

We have created a Movement Converter so you can convert your activity of choice into meters and miles; and you’ll be surprised how quickly the meters add up!

Check out our Events page and A-Z of Activities which provide lots of ideas and a variety of ways you can get involved. We would also recommend checking out the following resources:

  • Sustrans: they work closely with local communities to provide a network of safe walking and cycling routes; and provide lots of tips on how you can incorporate walking and cycling into your every day life.
  • NHS Live Well: their ‘Health and Fitness’ page provides a wealth of information on how people of all ages and mobility levels can get active.

There is a way for everyone to get involved; and whether you pledge 1 mile or 100 miles, your individual contribution matters.

How many miles do I have to commit to?

It’s entirely up to you! Whether you sign up to 1 mile or 100 miles, your individual contribution to our virtual 1,000 mile journey matters; just remember to raise some money along the way!

Check out our Events page and A-Z of Activities which list lots of events and ideas for clocking up those miles. Team Carr Gomm has been created with everyone in mind, so you can get involved no matter your age or level of mobility; we want everyone to know they are included. Do I have to fundraise?

Yes. Fundraising is easier than you might think. Our Events page and A-Z of Activities has lots of ideas to get you started. How you fundraise is entirely up to you; you may wish to choose an activity and ask people to sponsor you; or perhaps you could organise a sports day and people pay a few pounds to come along – you could even hold a raffle at the same time. The possibilities are endless.

We want everyone to be able to get involved, so if you would like to join Team Carr Gomm but are stuck as to how to fundraise whilst getting active, you can call the team on 0131 659 4777 or email fundraising@carrgomm.org.

Can you help me fundraise?

Yes! Our Fundraising Pack provides you with all the tools you need to get fundraising in one easy document. This includes our A-Z of Activities for ideas on how to start clocking up those miles, tips and hints on how to use social media to help you fundraise, and instructions for setting up your Virgin Money Giving Page to make donating as easy as possible.

We have created an Events page, listing a range of activities throughout Scotland which are fantastic ways of clocking up your miles, being social and raising money along the way. You can also find out more about Team Carr Gomm events across Scotland and connect with people in you local area by joining our Facebook Group: simply search for “Team Carr Gomm” and click “Join”.

The Fundraising Team is always here to help, so if you have a query, please do get in touch on 0131 659 4777 or at fundraising@carrgomm.org.
